iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable Is Here

Apple's foldable is called Duo, and it arrives in October

Apple introduced iPhone Duo today: the first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer one, grade 5 titanium, and a price of $1,999. Pre-orders open on Friday 16 October and it ships on Friday 23 October — five weeks behind the rest of today's lineup. It is not called Ultra, which is what most of us expected last week. Duo is the better name, and not only because it avoids colliding with the Watch. It describes the product: two displays with one behaviour. "iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original," said Apple CEO John Ternus, which is the sentence every foldable has been announced with since 2019. What makes this one worth examining is a design decision buried three paragraphs into the release.

Two displays with one aspect ratio is the real decision

Closed, the 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display carries 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than an iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales between them proportionally. That last sentence is the design. Apple Pencil with USB-C is supported on either display — later this year.

Touch ID is back, and Face ID is not mentioned

Authentication moves to Touch ID in the side button, which Apple frames as consistency: the same gesture whether the device is open or closed. You can also unlock it with an Apple Watch. Camera Control is on the frame, including the new Siri Camera mode. Face ID does not appear anywhere in the iPhone Duo release. On a device with two front-facing surfaces, one of which hides its camera under the display, that is not a surprising omission — but it is a real difference from the Pro phones, and worth knowing before you assume every iPhone habit transfers.

Durability is the section Apple wrote most carefully

The enclosure is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover in contrasting micro-blasted titanium. Ceramic Shield protects the back; Ceramic Shield 2 on the front is claimed to be three times more scratch-resistant than the previous generation. The whole thing is IP68 rated for splash, water and dust.The hinge uses more than 100 components, supports the centre of the display so it sits flat when open, and closes onto an integrated magnet array. Inside, support ribs stiffen the structure and antenna splits carry ceramic fibre inserts. The folding panel itself is the part that historically fails. Apple's answer: a scratch-resistant coating over a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer up to 40 percent stiffer than the industry norm, high-strength glass above and below the panel, custom adhesives that let the layers glide past one another like the pages of a book to relieve bend stress, and a titanium plate at the base.That is an unusual amount of construction detail for an Apple press release, and it tells you where the company thinks the scepticism lives. It is also all Apple's own testing until independent units are in hand.

Two batteries that behave like one

There is a high-energy battery on each side of the fold, with energy-rebalancing algorithms letting them operate as a single cell. Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer, and up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both are used equally.Charging reaches 50 percent in around 20 minutes wired, or around 30 minutes on a MagSafe or Qi2 charger.The outer-display figure beating iPhone 18 Pro Max is the quiet confirmation of the whole design: closed, this is a full day and a half of phone.

eSIM only, everywhere

iPhone Duo has no SIM tray in any market — the first iPhone for which that is true worldwide. Apple's stated reason is internal space for battery, and eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers. N1 handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread; C2 brings the new modem, including mmWave in the U.S. iPhone Handoff lets supported carriers move one number between two iPhones.If you travel through markets where local SIMs are still how connectivity gets bought, check your carriers before you pre-order. That is the practical cost of this decision, and it falls unevenly by region.

The bottom line

Last week the test I set for this device was whether Apple could make the unfolded state genuinely useful rather than merely impressive in a keynote. On the evidence of the release, the answer is a qualified yes — Split View, app pairs and a widget column are real work, not a demo reel. But Apple passed a harder test at the same time, and it is the one that will sell the thing: the closed phone is not a compromise. A 5.4-inch display with 90 percent of an iPhone 18 Pro's area, ProMotion, Always On, 3000 nits and 44 hours of video means you can carry Duo as a phone and open it when you want more.

Buying the sensible one instead? That is iPhone 18 Pro.
